A single-op company operates with only 1 person or a sole proprietor. This enables you to grow at "your pace"without having multiple DJs on staff. However, you should always be licensed, registered and insured.
A multi-op company operates with multiple DJs on staff and usually books a large variety of events per year. That being said, you cannot always be guaranteed that the DJ you meet at the consultation will be your DJ on the day of the event. Unfortunately, that is quite common in the industry today. When considering this route these are the things you should keep in mind:
1) It is always a good idea to book more than 50 gigs A YEAR before proceeding down this path.
2) Always have a written agreement that each employee sign. This ensures that each person get's paid the same amount and receives the same treatment in your company. Another consideration is whether you decide if your employees will be independent contractors representing your brand, or actual full/part time employees. What's the difference? An independent contractor is one who represents your brand only on occasion (An event, bridal show, etc) and is not exclusive. A full/part time employee is one who works "exclusively" for your company.
3) Keep in mind that YOU are responsible for the DJ's performance level and professionalism. You have a well established brand and you want to keep your reputation high.
4) You must have enough bookings to fill in your employee's calendar(s). If this is not you, then you may want to consider staying single-op until the appropriate time comes.
